“The World’s Biggest Party” – 15 minute TV news story from Australia

Burning Man is famous the world over, with Burners coming from all corners of the globe to check out the party. Last year one rumor was that Ashram Galactica, a turnkey camp modelled after a 5-star hotel with its own concierge, had been booked out by 200 Australians. We’re not sure if that actually happened – their web site says they only have 4 suites, and doesn’t mention anything about 2012 – but the dingo contingent was definitely on the Playa this year, in full force.

And they brought a TV crew with them. This 15-minute mini-documentary on Burning Man was just aired on national television in Australia. It’s mostly positive, although they do highlight sexual assault as an issue there.

  1. Regarding the profound unexpainable serendipitous beauty that exists at bm in quantum leaps, those who do not know talk, those who see no they could never give it .0001% of justice with words. I’m not kidding. But I’m laughing in joy. Thank you Burning Man!!!! I hope every good person goes, they won’t regret ( an understatement) and the world will be a better place for it.

  6. Doubt the spirit of BM can be explained in 15 min by a noob reporter – I mean you can put it into words, but one has to live it full 7 days (unless you have an early pass) with heat & art, dust & music and the best crowd in the world.
    According to Crime scorecard
    22 Arrests
230 Citations for drug and other violations
441 verbal warnings for everything from speeding to washing their hands and dishes on the playa
    – Not a big deal for 50K+ city. Yes, shit happens, but in this case more like a blip on that radar.

  7. Where did you hear Ashram Galactica was a turnkey camp? They’re an LA Based camp that has 4 “hotel” rooms that they gift to people on the playa, and then pamper them. I know tons of people who camp with them who are definitely not turnkey.

    • I’m not saying I know for sure if they have no turnkey camping there, but after knowing tons of Ashram Galactica people, I don’t personally know any who use them for turnkey camping.

      • From their web site: “the Grand Hotel at Ashram Galactica sets the Gold standard for hotel and conference facilities in the Black Rock City Metropolitan Area.

Plan an overnight stay in one of our four luxurious suites, enjoy a crisp cocktail at the world-famous Gilded Lilly Bar, relax with one of our renowned Nepalese aromatherapy massages at the Poshram Spa, sample Moroccan delicacies at the Casa Rosa Negra restaurant, or get legally married.

Our well-informed and obsequious concierge will be only too happy to book a room or advise the weary traveler of the many sights, sounds and sensations the city has to offer.” – if having a luxury suite already set up for you when you arrive, with concierge, massages, bar and restaurant at your fingertips is not turnkey camping, then I don’t know what is. Pretty sure you’re not pulling rebar if you’re in the aromatherapy massage spa. BTW this type of camp has been officially sanctioned by the BMOrg now, so I don’t think I am insulting anyone. I believe “we do what we want”, if people want this at Burning Man, they should be allowed to have it.

  8. Was a pretty good report. Its impossible to encapsulate it to an outsider, but they did alright. Did see the sexual assualt element getting used a bit by non Burners on social media here in Australia. Rape-a-thon may not of been the best term used. But if it helps bring light to it to better address it then its got to be a good thing
