Burner memes, especially ‘safety third’ developed as a way for burners to self-identify. I suppose it was in response to the massive influx of newbies around 2002-ish. Same as ‘fuck yer day’ and ‘best burn ever’. For me, it all got old very quickly – same as ‘last year was better’ stuff. It’s a way to say, I’m different just like you. Utilikilts, etc.
I don’t think the bacon meme started at BM, though.
