Craig Chalquist explores the Terrapsychology of the Black Rock Desert for the Masters of Fine Arts Program at CIIS. Craig Chalquist, PhD, is department chair of East-West Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies and a former core (but still adjunct) faculty member in the Department of Consciousness & Transformative Studies (College of Graduate and Professional Studies) at John F. Kennedy University. He is an academic adviser and adjunct faculty at Antioch University, Prescott College, and Pacifica Graduate Institute and the online General Psychology instructor for College of the Siskiyous. He has also taught at New York Open Center, Schumacher College, Argosy University, Sonoma State, New College of California, and Allan Hancock College, and is a thesis and dissertation examiner for Murdoch University and Monash University.
Kinda jumping on the caboose of a train that’s been leaving the station for awhile. Not knocking or ragging on his idea but Stanford had a series of classes over a decade ago in which the Black Rock desert featured prominently. Guest speakers and lecturers included Dr. Elizabeth Miller who is a professor of geology at Stanford and got her PhD on work she did on the history of the basin and range (specializing on the Pleistocene era Lake Lahanton) as well as Jim Mason who did amazing stuff at BM in the mid-late 90’s.

That’s “California Institute of Integral Studies”. Hopefully Craig will be camping with us at Cosmicopia next year. Another CIIS prof Carolyn Cooke joined us this past year. She taught a for credit course on the playa for 12 MFA students.

John Denver didn’t just plunge into the ocean in a kind of mythic fulfillment. His experimental plane had a design flaw. The tank switch valve was located behind the pilot’s seat and he couldn’t reach it in time and ran out of fuel in the primary tank.
