Did you download the free Rockstar Librarian Music Guide? This year, it seems a little light – listings from major camps like White Ocean and Robot Heart are not there at all.
If you were conspiracy-minded, then you might see this as related to the War on EDM, the declaration of a DMZ and new rules for loud art cars, and BMOrg’s request that no camps reveal their DJs until after the OMG sale. Perhaps digging even deeper into the underlying motives, if no live entertainment is ever promoted before ticket sales, BMOrg can try to argue they’re not providing Live Entertainment which would make them subject to a 9% tax like other large events in Nevada.
Those more inclined to view the world through rose tinted glasses will have to just shrug this off as maybe this year all the camps here had time to make flyers, but most were just too busy to email their flyers to RSL at the same time they were posting them on Facebook. YMMV – we report, you decide!
Anyway, if you want to know if your favorite DJs are going to be there, and make plans to meet your friends at events, here are all the flyers I can find for this year. If you have another one that’s not listed here, please share and I’ll add it. You may want to print this page to a PDF and take it with you to the Playa.
A big thanks to K-Dust’s Definitive Music Guide and The Music of Burning Man on Facebook, where many of these were posted.

Thanks for the DJ listing. Following my policy, I know that I don’t want to be at any event that promotes it’s DJ list …unless the DJs are Laurie Anderson or Philip Glass.

BMOrg paying the tax (or for that matter most of the taxes they dodge), would only translate to the next logical no-think step of passing the cost onto camps in the form of sound permits, which of course would overly empower law enforcement and rangers, and lead to more war-on-fun policies.
At the point where cops, lawyers, politicians, spineless leaders and such elements of greed and ego all culminate, you will find the future Black Rock City, functionally indistinguishable from its red tape ridden real world counterparts, save for the dust.
History should have shown that BMOrg’s attempts to avoid paying less to the Federales usually end up in more pain for Burners. Cops going nuts with dogs looking for citations, or ticket price rises necessary “due to increased costs”. Usually, as something gets bigger economies of scale kick in to decrease costs. Not when you have a volunteer workforce of 10,000 people, apparently.
Now you understand why the BOrg don’t solicit volunteers for most all positions like Transformus and all that non-existent overhead. …Er, well… Afraid that might inevitably lead to another conspiracy theory. Don’t want to upset JV and Badger.
After all, we already have vehicle permits. Now you suggest Sound Permits! I LOVE it. So if they pay, they have the right to prevent those around them from doing anything that requires aural communications. What’s next?…. Hearing Permits!! You pay extra to be placed where there are no Sound Permits.
…Can light, flame and laser permits be far behind? Permits are the future of the NV burn!! You heard it here, first.
Gee, OT is everywhere. Tragic they didn’t get placed and people freaked out about that, isn’t it?
It’s outrageous that after all their hard work gifting for so many years, cleaning up the MOOP of hundreds of thousands of people enjoying their gifts, they didn’t get any placement whatsoever – and were publicly criticized for “lacking interactivity” despite trying to work with the placement team and having multiple daily events.
It’s really not outrageous.
What was the nature of those “events” that made them interactive? How are the events modified by the participants? How can a participant tell they have been there and are not just a fungible supernumerary?
Fungible Supernumerary. Good band name.
Say it fast three times.
All snark aside, OT’s plans sounds incredible. It will be interesting to see how the crowds develop as OT (arguably the most popular and well attended sound camp in BM history) move around the playa, and how that affects other events going on. I really wish I was going this year, I sense it will be a notable year for many reasons, good and bad.
I predict a MOOPlosion, to be blamed on ravers.
So, if we are not to blame the MOOP on those who MOOP, pray tell whom should we blame?
You blame BMORG, of course. Are you OK?
I thought the idea was that you could moop as long as you were a raver, and then blame the BOrg for blaming the ravers. Did I get that right?
Very good, grasshopper.
I always only include camps that request to be in the guide and submit lineups to me. Many camps have always preferred to not be in the guide. It’s just how it is. They are always welcome to be included.
No criticism meant of your awesome guide – the question is why certain camps didn’t send their lineups into you this year.
Probably because of the BMORG’s recent statement about it. No conspiracy there. I happen to agree with not announcing lineups. And sure, it could very well be related to the entertainment tax. Again, no conspiracy. I don’t want BM to have to pay the tax. Do you?
And I should add, I fully support the efforts of Rock Star Librarian, it’s an awesome case of DIY spirit.
I’d have no problem with calling it “realism” rather than “conspiracy”.
I see you have your own special definition of conspiracy; that is, you don’t agree. So if its not a “conspiracy” when you make a plan formulated in secret by two or more persons – in this case to avoid a tax by privately suppressing published DJ lists – what do you call it?
A strategic decision.
When has “strategic” become secret? If it truly was strategic, we would have heard it from the Minister of Propaganda. You know, something like…
“While we appreciate the anticipation of the playa activities, we don’t want to misconstrue this to be entertainment by promoting lists of specific events and times. Please refrain from releasing such information before arrival at BRC.”
Of course if he or other BOrgites are “involved” with Rock Star Librarian, that would be a problem – and another conspiracy to the detriment of the burners.
Might have been too on the nose for the federales. Would have tipped them off. Hell I don’t know.
Sounds like a conspiracy to me.
