Burning Man and the official Regional events are by no means the only places in the world that Burners get together, have fun, and burn stuff. Burners were Burning long before Decommodification, LLC was a glint in the eye of the BMOrg beancounters.

Our aim with this guide is to collect a calendar of events of interest to Burners. Recurring annual events would be preferred. For now I want to restrict this to festivals and Burns, if we put local DJ nights on it will probably grow too big, too quick.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

Friday, September 2 2016

Started in September 1924

Zozobra is a hideous but harmless boogie man marionette. He is a toothless, empty headed façade. He has no guts and doesn’t have a leg to stand on. He is full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. He never wins. He moans and groans, rolls his eyes and twist his head. His mouth gapes chomps. His arms flail about in frustration. Every year we do him in. We string him up and burn him down in a blaze of fireworks. At last, he is gone, taking with us all our troubles for another year. Santa Fe celebrates another victory. THE LOST HORIZON NIGHT MARKET

This is like a truck farmer Burning Man:

http://mslk.com/reactions/lost-horizens-night-market-party-in-a-box-truck/
http://www.trendhunter.com/trends/lost-horizon-night-market
http://www.wired.com/underwire/2010/05/lost-horizon-night-market/
http://www.eattoblog.com/lost-horizon-night-market/

The email invitation was clear: “This is a private event. Please do not post this to any mailing lists, blogs, websites, printing presses, social networks, Twitter, etc. It is critical that our activities stay under the radar… We must leave no trace of our activities.”

The directions themselves (not mailed out until the night before the event) were purposefully vague. To get to the Market you had to walk down an honest-to-goodness “passageway” — in reality a candle-lined alley covered in potholes full of what may or may not have been water. The door, nondescript, had a handmade sign taped to it, and opened onto an unlighted hallway. And only then did we emerge into the Market itself. But what exactly is the Lost Horizon Night Market? And why am I writing about it on a food blog?

The Lost Horizon Night Market is hard to define. In the open warehouse space were several rented trucks, each with its own reason for being. To name just a few: the Smash Truck asked people to bring their unwanted items in to be destroyed; the Rocking Chair Truck was full of rocking chairs, for no other purpose than to sit and rock; the Pinhole Truck set up a photo shoot in the back of the truck and spent over half an hour setting up a photograph to be taken by a pinhole camera. There was a truck that would celebrate your birthday (whether it was your actual birthday that night or not), another truck that was performing science experiments with Elmer’s glue, and another truck in which our friend was playing cello as accompaniment to a short silent movie. Everything was technically free, though donations were always accepted to compensate the people participating. In lieu of donations you could bring something to barter with — one of our friends brought a box of clementines, and we saw lots of people sharing wine and other alcohol.

From attending the fall 2010 symposium, a few of the Night Market rules that make it work:

1. Trucks are not decorated on the outside in any way. The experience is entirely inside each truck. This keeps passer-bys from finding it. (Typically you hang a curtain to cover the back of the truck.) Large trucks are allowed, but you have to have the necessary driver to get it to/from the event.
2. No alcohol or drug use.
3. Everything must be legal, and ready to be observed by LEOs.
4. No admission charge, to the event or to a truck, though a tips jar is allowed.
5. Secret location, only disclosed 24 hours before the event, though date and town are told ahead of time and only to those who have specific interest and involvement. (This works because you can spend as much time as you want prepping your truck, and then drive it to the location once disclosed.) This also allows the location to be dynamic, depending on local cooperation: there is no BLM/LE problem like the Burn.
6. Ends at 2am, since the more roudy and illegal things tend to happen after that.
7. No commercial-themed trucks, though consumable give-aways to promote a new product, like a new cookie recipe are allowed.
8. Management does not “approve” trucks, though those that do not follow the rules are not allowed to park. Management only sets the time and location.
9. Trucks are not allowed to leave until the end. Only by special arrangement can they move during the event Example: there was a film noire truck that slowly moved while the visitors were inside, leaving them at a new location when they exited
10. You can have external events, like a boat ride, where you would hand out (free) tickets and have people travel to the event that is not at the truck location.

2014 Update: Unfortunately, when this was handed over to new management, the NYC Night Market in 2013 has not been as successful.

FIGMENT

This was a nice alternative Burn. The art installations were very creative, on par with the best at the NV burn. Considering the location, cost (no admission, and even the ferry was free), it was an easier and more productive to get exposed to a Burn-level of creativity. There was also a lack of that amazing playa dust.

Difficult at best at the Burn, Figment had installations in several of the old residences, essentially taking over the subject room. There are also artist studios on the island, with installations and even performance space for things like the “Un-seen Dance.” Several installations were in the basement vaults of the old fort, which gave a chance for dark work.

Unfortunately, Figment is only 10a-7pm, so there is no “night” aspect. It also lacked the grand scale of the Burn.

There was also a bit of commercialism: a food vendor, and one house was set up to sell art. YUCK!!!

It’s easy to decide to do Figment again. In fact, some few exhibits are on the island though October 3rd. However, they are only available weekends, Friday-Sunday, when the (still free) Governors Island ferry runs.

I suggest that “I Feel” and all Carmel Productions events not be in the Burner Burns listing. Interesting that they have learned the burner rhetoric, but they simply don’t do it, and know it.

Scores points with me for being 100% Volunteer Run; “501(c)(3) Not for Profit” not so much. The Borg’s commercialization and personal profiteering have pretty much spoiled me on the 501(c)(3) designation. Unlike Transformus, could not readily find financials on the Apogea web site.

  4. Today, from ABP:

In addendum, there are numerous awesome festivals occurring this weekend. Kudos to all Burners throwing, or participating, in these festivals. Pulse Radio penned an article upon Every Great Party Going Down This Memorial Day Weekend

The big burnerly festival this weekend is Lightning in a Bottle by the awesome DoLabs crew, of near to 20,000 participants. There are numerous links, and articles, discussing of this festival.

Flipside, an awesome regional of near to 3,000 participants, in Texas, has angered the gods. The 2015 festival was of the need to be evacuated in due of the river flooding the festival. This weekend, near to one foot of rain occurred in Texas

SOAK, in the Pacific northwest, and Playa Del Fuego, in Delaware, are regionals occurring this weekend, of near to 2,000 participants. Both of these festivals are of an awesome community and vibe.

Other regionals, of less than 1,000 participants, occurring this weekend are Ignite, in Virginia, Firefly, in Vermont, and Scorched Nuts, in Ohio.

    • Had some FB interaction with a Flipside BoD member that pretty much turned me off to them. The opposite of the Transformsu group, he challeged who I was and what credentials I had to post in their FB group. I asked, “If I were to bring my theme camp would I have to deal with you?” He said, yes.

Even if he is not there anymore, it suggests an unnecessary attitude of the group to let him be in the BoD and comment freely like that on their FB group, particularly for potential theme camps.

Be aware of you will not find information in regards of these awesome festivals created by the Burner community, in due of it is not permitted to discuss these festivals upon any site controlled by the BMOrg, except of to denigrate these awesome festivals.

    • ABP, you’re full of shit. BMORG is listing all of our local 10 principles events now (even the ones that aren’t official regionals). And nobody is censoring our Facebook group. People post stuff about events that aren’t remotely burns (e.g. local art events), and it stays up. If somebody posts for music festival that claim to be “transformational” though it usually generates complaints (but not censorship).

Lightning in a Bottle? The self-proclaimed “greenest festival in the country”? Did you see the mounds of trash left behind this year? Fuck LiB, and fuck the rest of your “transformational festivals”. They’re not alternatives to burns.

      • Andrew, this is the web. Easy enough to prove things exist here that others claim don’t. Pretty hard to prove things things have been removed.

If we are to believe your claims that things exist, please provide Borg-sponsored links to non-Borg burns, such as Figment, Night Market and Burnt Soup TX. Should be easy enough, as well as provide links to clearly dissenting comments in Borg-sponsored discussion boards, preferably including links to this blog.

As for proving things that have been removed, try to look for any activity by Nomad Traveler on FB in the past two years. Oh, and has the Burning Man Sucks FB group lifted their policy of deleting links to this blog?

But absent such proof, ABP’s comments are no less compelling than yours.

      • … as Andrew denigrates LIB and the other burnerly transformative festivals, listed in this page, thrown by members of the Burner community. Kudos to all whom throw any festival, we owe you Gratitude.

My belief is of Gratitude might be the eleventh principle, others are of the belief of Consent, in the place of the, at present, eleventh principle of the six members of the Borg takes many millions of dollars towards their pockets, and not permitting fair payments towards the costs of the artists, firing any DPW group whom desires to be paid in a fair manner and replacing the DPW group with contractors, and not permitting a fair payment towards the awesome burners whom spend numerous hours throwing the regionals, in despite of near to $40 million of ticket sales.

Andrew is correct in regards of the Borg now permits some discussion, after their representatives assimilated the big Burning Man Facebook groups, and their representatives were instructed to assimilate the awesome regional Facebook groups, or begin competing Facebook groups, purposed towards halting any discussion of the Burner community upon any subject, of which, the Borg does not desire to be discussed upon.

The Borg desires of the Burner community to move on, and not be of the belief of they have any say, or proper representation, upon any matters of importance to the Burner community, and they priorly stated, numerous times, of might you not like what we were doing, begin your own festival, of which, awesome Burner groups did so. This Burner Burns page lists some of the awesome festivals.

As for Consent, I would question why that should be distinct from Civic Responsibility. We do need Equality. Sounds like a new list is needed.

  6. Cremation of Care. Haha, very funny. But not, you know, actually useful to list since you and I can’t go.

Glastonbury. WTF. Why not list Coachella (it has art by burners) or every other fucking music festival on the planet. What makes Glastonbury burny?

Oregon Country Fair; yeah there’s some cross-over with burners, but there are a whole bunch of similar events. Google “barter faire”. And barter faires cross-over with a constellation of other events that might be of interest to some burners; Rainbow Gathering, pagan festivals, fairy festivals, renaissance fairs, etc.

I know burnersxxx considers transformational festivals to be alternatives to burns, and the list is stuffed full of them. I’m not interested in these. I’d suggest adding “HAS VENDORS yes/no” and “HAS A LINEUP OF PAID PERFORMERS yes/no” to the desired format, which would let me filter out the events I don’t care about.

I don’t necessarily want to see the list restricted to burns (events with an effigy and principles). I’m happy to see Wasteland Weekend and Camp Tipsy included. But the way this is going, it’s becoming a list of miscellaneous “quirky” festivals (except for Glastonbury, again, why is that included?) that might appeal to some subset of burners.

    • BYO ALCOHOL is confusing.Yes presumably means “no vendors, if you want to be sure you can drink, bring your own”.

No could mean “we’re a spiritual/family event and alcohol is not permitted as part of our ethos” or “we sell booze, but prohibit outside alcohol to enhance our profits”, or “we sell booze, but you can also bring your own”.

VENDORS yes/no would clear some of that up.

      • These issues highlight differentiation factors that should be fields of the listing once it is in a spreadsheet/database.

More pertinent, since the Borg has bastardized it, is what makes something a “burner” event? If they decide to burn an effigy at half-time as the Super Bowl, does that make it a burn? (Of course Larry and Marion are there to give it a blessings and spread the word, using 1st class tickets and 5-star accommodations.)

  7. Why do Burners not know of these awesome burnerly festivals?

Burners do not know of these awesome burnerly festivals in due of it is not permitted to discuss of these other festivals upon any social media sites, or websites, assimilated by the Borg, except of to denigrate the festivals not assimilated by them and within their control. The Borg, utilizing their Burning Man(tm) brand trademark of their Decommodification LLC, has assimilated all social media, and websites, utilizing the term Burning Man(tm) within it, by placing their representatives, within contract to the Burning Man Project, as administers of these sites, purposed to halt of any free speech discussions of which they do not desire.

In addendum, at present, the Burning Man Facebook page, of more than one million likes, is hiding comments of which the Borg does not desire, and the Burning Man Journal posts solely permit comments licking the arse of the Borg. It is most humorous to view the difference of the number of comments listed on their Facebook page, and, in actuality, the number of comments, and to view the comments upon Larrys, at present, BM Journal post explaining of the rational of why he refuses to pay more than half the costs of the awesome artists, solely 3% of their bloody $38 million gained in due of ticket sales and tax levies, and of he desires of his rich mates, and others, to pay for the costs of the art on the playa.

My belief is of this is not the proper manner of which an experimental community, or of a 501(c)3 public benefit corporation, should be, it is more within the manner of a dictator, or of a cult.

    • The main point is that the Borg would like for all to consider alternate burns through their web site and the sanctioned “Regionals,” even so far as to hope people will use that term for alternate burns and redirect people back to their brand-name events. Any burns beyond that are rigorously kept out of their listings and discussions.

That’s why we need a consistent, broad and regularly updated listing – with associated discussions – for people to know where else you can find fellow burners. Needed, ironically enough, because the Borg’s ticketing tends to exclude veteran burners. Hence the term “Burner Burns” fits in a way that could now exclude the NV burn.

  8. Note that I did not suggest that we necessarily list prices. However, for some of us – like me, the ticketing situation is a pass/fail for me. It is an initial parsing decision on if I want to particpate. I don’t have interest in any “invitation” events – a lesson learend by the Borg manipulation of who attends. There was a burn in CT that I dropped interest in as soon as I earned that you had to “register” and be approved to buy tkts.

I want the free-form attendance like the NV burn before the sellout, and Transformus.

I do not agree in regards of a ticketing field. The organizers of these events desire to build communities of participants, the organizers of these events do not desire to sell tickets to people whom solely desire to be spectators. My belief is of this a manner where Burning Man went wrong, Larry desires radical inclusion of near to 30,000 newbies each burn, in a random manner, in the place of selling tickets purposed towards the radical inclusion of people whom desire to be participants of the burn, and participants of the Burner community. The Borg, at present, in their assimilation of the regionals events, requires of their regional representatives to require of the regionals events to sell tickets in a random manner, in the place of permitting the regionals events to sell tickets to people whom desire to be participants in their communities.

My belief is of might a person desire to be a participant of these events, and of their communities, they will view the websites and then decide might they desire to participate in the manner of as a member of their communities, and solely then decide if might they desire to buy tickets.

Location and time of year are two important search/sort criteria, as is ticketing (free, pre-sale but limited to X tickets on sale MM/DD/YYYY, reservation but limited to X tickets before MM/DD/YYYY, pay at gate). A spreadsheet also makes it easier to see what information may be missing.

        • It was incredibly easy to cut and paste ABP’s suggestions above into the page. This would have taken at least twice as much time if I had to re-key the data into a spreadsheet, then even more time to run a report and re-integrate the data into the page.

If this idea takes off, then in the future it may be worth investing time and money into a more convenient user interface which facilitates searching through thousands of entries. There doesn’t seem to be a lot of point to that if it’s only a few of us using it, and it lists half a dozen events.

The key behavior that will make this offering useful is Burners contributing festival information. If they don’t do that, the interface is irrelevant.

          • You are enitrely right. We are still at Step 1. If you tried to spreadsheet/database this, the record fields/columns might only be half right at best. We are at the “gathering” stage, where we will consider and debate here what metrics to apply to the various events we assemble. Burners will get benefit from just this listing, since they can search the page as it sits and get some good value.
