Burners Need Our Help!

It seems there has been lots of turnover at the top at BMOrg over the last couple of years. Out with the old, in with the new…or out with the old, WTF do we do now? This seems to have left somethings up in the air, with less than a month to go. Rat Lady has stepped up to help out with mobility-challenged transportation; and now Burning Man needs our help to restore the Live Feed from the Playa that was enjoyed in the past by so many who couldn’t attend the party, or wanted to get psyched up on the way up.

Here’s the UStream Channel.

From Camp Envy’s facebook page:

live streamJim Graham here, communications director for Burning Man. Thanks for your interest in helping with this year’s webcast.

Here’s what we’re dealing with. Our webcast team, who’s been doing it for more than 10 years, decided it’s time to pass the torch. I’ve just recently come on board as the comm director and didn’t realize the team was using its own equipment to live stream the event and the burn.

In the best of all worlds, I’m hoping to put together a small team to manage this year’s webcast, including providing the tower-mounted camera and video encoders / streaming box, regularly checking the stream to make sure it’s online and occasionally climb the center camp tower to clean the camera lens. (This last one might be optional since I’ve got someone who really likes to climb.) The signal would go into our Network Operations Center in Center Camp and out to Ustream from there.

A fallback position is that we purchase new hardware and hand it to someone with expertise installing it on the tower. And then monitor the feed throughout the week and during the burn.

Experience with maintaining the hardware and software portions is key.

In past years we’ve had BMIR streaming on the audio feed (we use Ustream) and we’ve had a camera that can be remotely controlled by participants. The BMIR option this year would be a “nice to have”. We’re open to having the camera target a small number of installations and cycle between them, but having the camera controlled by people online is not going to be an option.

We plan to take very good care of the person or persons who can help us out this year. We’re be looking at a bit more sophisticated set up for 2014.

If you are still interested and can handle the hardware side as well as the streaming, shoot me an email and include your phone number so I can give you a call.

Thanks again for your interest.

So, anyone who knows anything about streaming video live on the Internet, or even better providing P/T/Z controls to multiple Internet users…BMOrg needs your help.

Set Smartphones to UStream! Data plans be damned, maybe this could be the biggest U-Streamed event yet. Everyone holding their smartphones in the air, who needs glowsticks?

Burning Man GIVEAWAY – Win a Goggle & Respirator Set from JADED MINX | Existential Ella

Are you ready for the dust? Can you handle the blow?

Even if you think you’ve got it covered, these goggle and respirator sets look pretty Burning Man-friendly. Maybe Burning Man will get all upset that people are selling equipment to help Burners survive their event – and send law suits towards Wal-Mart, North Face, Camelbak, El Monte Rv Rentals, Chevron, the City of San Francisco, and all the other suppliers.

Or, just maybe – they’ll help promote this cool contest too! Yep, Existential Ella and Jaded Minx (with the help of Burners.Me) are gifting one lucky Burner with a free respirator and goggles. Not Google goggles. Dust-proof, wind-proof, laser-resistant, goo-proof goggles. Great for riding around on bikes and art cars. Click HERE to Enter, or here if you want to just buy this anyway – it’s sixty bucks.

One lucky Existential Ella reader will win a respirator & matching pair of goggles!! This is an absolute must-have for surviving the desert winds of Burning Man, clubbing til the suns comes up, or convincing your roommates aliens really do exist in the middle of the night.

Dream – Art and Culture of Burning Man

This HD video was shot by the cinematographer behind Spark – a Burning Man story. It premiered at the Sonoma International Film Festival, and won a Staff Pick from Vimeo.

lightworksIlluminating the culture of Burning Man – the annual pilgrimage to Nevada’s Black Rock Desert – as a catalyst for community, innovation and the actualization of dreams, this film offers a glimpse into the art and culture of this dynamic community with the hope to spark a dream within you.

DREAM premiered at the Sonoma International Film Festival. Directed and produced by Rich Van Every of lightworkscreative.tv. Rich also was a cinematographer for “Spark: A Burning Man Story,” a feature film on the inside story of Burning Man during a year of unprecedented challenges and growth.

The Android Jones dancing projection screen at about 6:00 in is amazing, hope to see that again this year.

Who’s playing? [Updates]

Musicians Banglater and de Homem-Christo of Daft Punk pose at the world premiere of the film "TRON: Legacy" in Hollywood, CaliforniaAnyone got any info? Send it in and we’ll share it with Burners.
Yes, ha ha , daft punk is playing, good one.

Rockstar Librarian is on the case, and will have something for us on the Tuesday before the burn:

Hello lovelies! I am putting the finishing touches on a new data collection tool for this year’s RSL Music Guide and will be sending out notifications about it to all the sound camps and music camps for which I have contact information. Feel free to PM me your camp information if you believe I won’t have it already and you’d like your camp’s musical info included in the guide. Promise it is worth the wait!

In the meantime, please share any information you have. Burners wants to know! Give us some hints, are there surprises in store? Oakey, perhaps? Juno Reactor? Lucent Dossier Experience?

We’re missing 2 major sound camps this year – Opulent Temple and Root Society. Both camps in the past have brought large numbers of big names DJs to the Playa, then made those DJs available to other camps. Without them as anchors, this could be a big blow to the Burning Man music scene. Or, it could be a return to the roots – giving lesser known “Cargo Cult” DJs the chance to play on the equipment left behind for them by the gods. Fertility 2.0 champions Distrikt have moved 1 block further away from the Esplanade, to 9 & G. On the plus side, we have Digital Apex – a new camp spun-out from Dancetronauts; and we get a giant bamboo control tower that shoots lasers and flames, and we get White Ocean, who are bringing some world class talent:
