How did Burning Man begin? Larry Harvey says “I don’t really remember” and “I’ve got all these stories I tell”. Only 2 of the current ruling group ever went to Burning Man on the beach. On Michael Mikel’s official Burning Man bio, it says he joined in 1988. However, in court testimony in the 2007 John Law suit, it was established that nobody from the Cacophony Society attended any Burning Man events until 1989. Should we believe Burning Man’s web site, or statements in a Court of Law? Incidentally, in this case the court heard testimony from Stuart Mangrum that Mikel was not telling the truth.
In the “official” history, as recorded by Brian Doherty and others, an artist named Mary Grauberger was burning statues on the beach on the solstice. However, Mary insists that she wasn’t. Her roommate Janet Lohr, Larry’s long time girlfriend, said Mary sometimes made driftwood sculptures for the tide to reclaim, but never effigies to burn.
In earlier interviews, Larry Harvey claimed a number of times that Burning Man began in 1985.
So what really happened? Who was burning a Wicker Man on the beach in 1985?
After 4 years of research, I have finally uncovered the true story of the origins of Burning Man.

And the answer that Larry found for community survival is: MONEY. Don’t think that is a particularly interesting find.
He’s not the finder (hint: it’s Stanford/SRI/DARPA)

Burnersxxx for PRESIDENT!
Like your current president, I am ineligible
Hey, it’s the USA. Like the Borg, rules were made to be broken, for the right contribution.
My first act would be a new reality show. Airport Karaoke. Paris can mix, but can she sing?

For the record that is not the temple last year you are showing in your video slide. Seems like you don’t go or have no clue to what the temple is or its location. Carry on with the conspiracy chem trail internet Satan things. But at least get your shit talk correct.
Yes, you are right. Burnersxxx has obviously never been to the NV burn, does not know what the temple is, and did not show the temple picture you expected. Obvioulsy this runs his entire argument to ground.
Enjoy your comped ticket, Gordon!
It is clearly labeled on the slide as “The Temple of Transition”. That’s what the art piece was called. Get your own shit talk correct.
How does the hit movie from 1985, The Legend of Billie Jean, fit into this?
A comment from Snoopy, 2014:
My guess is that the burn was inspired by the 80s classic film, “The Legend of Billie Jean”, released in 1985 (1 year before the first burn on Baker Beach). You be the judge: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGd1qFSvnP8
I really hope it was something as cheesy as this, and not Mr. Harvey burning the man to help get over his girlfriend (as has been rumored)… only because the later is such a pussy thing to do. And I hate to think I spent 10 years devoting my life to something with such beta origins.
I had always heard the GF thing, which was uninspiring, like you say. If it was to signify rebirth, repeating it every year is quite a reminder.
That is was to carry on the tradition the Wehrmacht started of a mass gathering to watch a flame from “the origin” is much cooler and far more creepy.
Alles uber Deutchland!

*** Put Peter Coyote on the Borg BoD!! ***
I have to listen to it again it is so fascinating.
Circa roughly 1968 to 1972, I used to help neighbours with beachfront property build a straw man from old clothes, including sneakers. Then we burned it on July 4th.
Wells Beach, Maine.
The odour of it was memorable and we cheered it on, so to speak. They asked for any worn out clothes I had to donate! We built it and burned it while doing our own fireworks.
I am sure it is banned now.
A “burning man,” you say? …Sounds like a clear violation of the BM patented/trademark/copyright activity, as originally established by the 1936 Wehrmacht torch in Berlin. Don’t repeat yourself unless you want the Borg legal fleas infecting you.
Yeah…I guess you can say it’s a cult……..but actually, I consider it “The Annual Convention”…heheh )'(
Annual Satanist get together in a pentagon.
