Pinchbeck #metoo Spotlights Consent Principle

pinchbeck

Daniel Pinchbeck went to some trouble to insert himself into the media as one of the leading Burning Man scenesters, following in his counter-cultural heritage at the heart of the Beat scene growing up on Ginsberg’s lap.

Pinchbeck’s “Evolver” group was a Burning Man-related social engineering think tank run out of Baltimore, Maryland.

Whether you are a Playa newbie or the most grizzled Burner veteran, there is always more to learn and new techniques to master for maximizing your Burning Man adventure. As we approach Burn 2012, with hordes of rabid newbies getting prepped to descend on Black Rock City in faux fur, this is the moment to prepare your Psyche for the sub-cultural onslaught coming your way imminently, and brush up on your Playa protocol. In this learning experience, we will explore deep questions such as:

*Is it a good idea to snort bath salts from the bellybutton of a stranger?

*Is getting branded on your tongue something you are likely to regret later?

*Are Sparkle Ponies worth taming?

*Is the Burning Man camp a new form of social organism?

*Can hipster cache be bought with a credit card?

All these questions and more will be addressed in this unique one-time only webinar. Please bring your own “burning” questions to this interactive forum.

Join Daniel Pinchbeck, executive director of Evolver, along with Jill Ettinger and Baza Novic, Evolver LA honchos, with special guests, on a journey into the practice and philosophy of Burning Man, the festival’s dust-blown past and unclear future. We will discuss the evolution of the festival, its ever-growing cultural impact, this year’s ticket fiasco, and much more. Also, how do you integrate Burning Man into your daily life?

He has been a frequent stage speaker at Burning Man. We’ve talked about him a few times before:

Ayawhats Up?

In particular I recalled seeing him on stage at LIB explaining:

the reason women make noise during sex, is to attract the other males in the tribe to come and have sex with them, too – thus increasing their chance of being inseminated

Back in those days, like 2011-12, this neo-anthropological, polyamory and group sex positive view of the world seemed highly compatible with Burner culture. I would go so far as to say that it WAS the culture, based on almost all of the veteran Burners I know (let’s just close our eyes to all the kids and black magic which are also such a big part of the event).

Well, times have changed. 2012 is long, long behind us. Trump is President, Republicans run the country, the economy is booming, NFL is dying, the Clintons colluded with Russia for money, Weinstein is a rapist, and it looks like Pedowood is going down.

HUNDREDS of victims have already come forward. Thanks to effective and authentic hash tag campaigns like #rosearmy and #metoo, the dam is breaking and we are hearing reports of sexual abusers in advertising, Silicon Valley, WikiLeaks critics, and now one of the leading charismatic characters of Burning Man counter-culture has been dragged into #metoo.

The New York Post said Writer Blames Predatory Ways On Women

Pinchbeck took to Facebook with a confessional, justifying his abuse as being a victim of abuse. We have to break the cycle people, and that is why #pedowood must be exposed.

In the past, I have been sexually fixated, creepy, predatory. I acted in ways that were hurtful and upsetting to women. I feel very guilty about my past behavior. I want to make amends. I feel the way I can best do that is to speak honestly about what I did, and why I believe I did it. To do this I also have to explore my personal history.

To be clear about lines I never crossed: I never had nonconsensual sex, sex with a minor, sex with someone unconscious, or lied about my intentions to get someone into bed. What I have done are many unaware and disrespectful behaviors, specifically: Pushing for sex without listening to why she was hesitant; seeking sexual contact with volunteers in an organization that I helped to start; the use of substances as tools of seduction; being incredibly insensitive and tone-deaf to women’s wants and needs; making unwanted advances; focusing on much younger women

[Source]

He has never had non-consensual sex, but he HAS pushed for someone to have sex and didn’t listen to her saying no and HAS used substances as tools of seduction. Dude, this is some Bill Cosby shit. Drugging them is not consent.

daniel and taoThere has been a push within the Burner community for some time to get an 11th Principle added, that of Consent. It is really just so important to the preservation and survival of Burner culture. If we want to all feel free at home, there needs to be mutual respect by everyone.

Pinchbeck at least had the decency and guts to write a lengthy apology, more than some of the other celebrities named so far.

Daniel is certainly not the only person within the Burner scene who has ever acted like this.

IS THERE A BURNING MAN #METOO?

Or is Burning Man the place for all of the Weinsteins of the world to go to once they check out of rehab, Radical Inclusion meaning we welcome them whatever their sins?

Daniel’s mom, Joyce Glassman, was a central member of the New York beat scene when this free-love, sex & drugs counter-culture was just starting to break through from the elites to the masses. It didn’t make her happy. Pinchbeck first blames his wacky childhood…

The roots of it go back to my early childhood. I was traumatized when I was very young. The main things were: My grandmother and great aunts used to give me frequent enemas, which I believe I internalized as a form of sexual abuse. This left me with trauma and I would say a bit of OCD. I was never breastfed and believe that left me feeling lacking and desperately craving some essential connection to women. I feel my childhood was tinged with this sense of lack, even despair.

I became dangerously sick as a child with a spinal infection…The illness slowed down my psycho-sexual development and made me feel fragile and exiled from the world. It is because I experienced this core separation from the world and the body that I developed a particular kind of intellect that is able to think through areas that are uncomfortable for most people. It was how I learned to protect myself while I was in the hospital and afterwards. It also led me to mental rationalizations, idealizations, and justifications as a tendency.

My mother was a Feminist author and book editor. We lived together. She was alone, without a partner, and often depressed. I internalized a lot of her pain and frustration with men. I didn’t want to be another hurtful man – but I also lacked positive male role models.

…and then celebrity and the drugs he once promoted:

I had a taste of what it must be like to be rock star or a successful DJ – to a certain extent, it was the opportunity I had been yearning for. I had many beautiful and consensual experiences that I still treasure. What had been once so difficult to “attain” became normal.

When my second book on prophecy became a bestseller, I was suddenly a modest celebrity. I also put a huge amount of my energy into launching a company, Evolver.net, which drained me. I lost focus on my own creative work, which added to my frustration and resentment. In that several year cauldron of becoming famous, starting Evolver, feeling hopeless and futile in a prophetic mission that seemed utterly beyond me, my Shadow material got activated – and the area of its expression was my sexuality. I believed that I was propagating the same free love ideology that Allen Ginsberg, one of my heroes, had promoted. This included breaking through the boundaries around erotic expression. I now see I was ignoring issues of power dynamics as well as my own complexes.

One negative element, for me – I now understand – was the ongoing use of some of the mind-expanding chemicals I wrote about in my first book. Because I was compared to Leary and McKenna, people assumed I was a maestro of mind expansion – and I assumed it as well. In actual fact, I now see that the continued use of certain chemicals had a negative impact on my personality over time. They made me more impulsive and self-centered

[Source]

Do what thou wilt.

How many thousands, if not millions of people were lured to use these substances based on Pinchbeck’s promotion of them – and the media’s promotion of him? It is the same thing for Leary, McKenna, Ginsberg, Burroughs – the lot of them. All people closely connected to the Deep State, but being sold to us through the media as counter-culutral icons, role models for rebellion against The Man. Telling us to get out of our minds on drugs, because this will somehow make us smarter and better. How many relationships and lives have been ruined, not just by chemicals, but by the entire Crowleyan counter-culture that has been peddled by this Shadow World crew over the last 50 years?

Pinchbeck somehow manages to work President Trump into his tale of regret.

“I remember one friend – the son of a famous NY art gallerist who kept giving me heroin – giving me the same advice as Trump: If I wanted more success with women, I should just grab them between the legs,” he said. “The basic model of sexuality in that scene was aggressive, dominance based, and involved transgression of boundaries as a norm … This was the model of how things worked in the world where I found myself coming of age as a man – how I was conditioned. Looking back, it was incredibly primitive.”

Perhaps coincidence, perhaps connected, but famous New York art gallerist Vito Schnabel was arrested at Burning Man this year for distributing drugs. He is the son of even-more-famous New York artist Julian Schnabel

Pinchbeck wrote a post in 2013 defending himself from accusations by a former friend that he was a serial rapist. There is a broader story here about sex, consent, and psychedelics.

What can Burners do about #metoo?

Add an 11th Principle: CONSENT. We can make it first out of the 11.

How else are we going to educate the 40% virgins coming every year?

We’ll let Mr Pinchbeck have the last word:

I feel terrible that I could have avoided causing hurt to women if I had just been more aware and had some protocols and principles around sexual conduct – training in how to articulate desires and define boundaries

2016: How To Deal With Cops At Burning Man

How to deal with cops at Burning Man, (2016 update)
by Mark Atwood

Do not consent to a search.

Never consent to a search. Say the phrase “I do not consent to a search.”

The cops are trained to make you flustered and to “take command” of the situation. Or they can be “polite”: “Mind if we take a look around?” Yes, you mind. “I do not consent to a search.”

Even if you have nothing for them to find, ALWAYS say “I do not consent to a search.”

Never consent to a search of your body, of your clothing, of your possessions, of your car, of your truck, of your trailer, of your RV, of your tent, or of your camp. You especially never consent to the search of anyone else’s property.

They can ask the other people in your group or in your car, not just the driver or leader. “Mind if we take a look?” You should all sing the same song: “I do not consent to a search.”

Even if they threaten you with arrest or if threaten to bring a sniffing dog, continue to say “I do not consent to a search”. Even while they are searching you or your stuff, continue to say it. “I do not consent to a search”.

Being Questioned.

Cops can ask you questions.

They may say things like “We’re just talking”, or “What do you think of …?”, or “Can you help us out?”

You do not have to answer their questions, and probably shouldn’t.

They can ask you where your camp is, and who you are camping with.
You don’t have to answer them.

Never answer any questions about recreational drugs.

Never answer any questions about recreational drugs.

Remember, you never take drugs, you never carry drugs, you never supply drugs, you have no idea where to get drugs, you don’t want any drugs, and you don’t know anyone who does.

That includes cannabis in any form. Cannabis is still illegal on Federal land, even for medical use.

If you are a Nevada resident in November, remember to vote for the Nevada Marijuana Legalization Initiative.

Don’t lead them to your camp.

They may try to get you to lead them to your camp.

They can be very commanding and matter of fact about it, they may say “We’re going to your camp.” They will make it sound as if you have no choice. You do have a choice, and you are going to chose to not to lead them to your camp. Never lead them to your camp.

If they really really insist on you leading them somewhere, then lead them to a Black Rock Ranger outpost.

Keep your tent closed.

Always zip your tent closed when you are not in it. If possible, use screens or sheets to block transparent window screens, so there is no line of sight into your tent. You may want to use a luggage lock to lock the zipper of your tent when you are not in it.

If your tent is zipped shut, they need a warrant to open it, or they need your consent. They probably won’t have a warrant, and you are not going to give them your consent, remember? “I do not consent to a search.”

Your name and your ID.

If they ever stop you, you do have to tell them your correct “wallet name” as it is printed on your official ID. Cops are deeply and profoundly uninterested in arguments about “dead names”. Tell them your name as it is printed on your official ID, driver’s license, or passport. You do not have to show them your ID if they ask to see it. You especially do not have to go to your camp to get your ID for them.

If you are a not a US citizen and are visiting on a visa waiver program, you do not have to carry your passport with you. If you are a resident alien on a visa (e.g. you have a “green card”), you do have to carry your green card with you. Sorry about that.

Being Detained, or “Am I free to go?”.

The magic phrase is: “Am I free to go?”

Keep saying it. As soon as they say “yes”, walk away immediately, swiftly, and without another word. Do not run, just walk.

If they write you a ticket, you must take it. Put it in your pocket, and then you say “Am I free to go?”

If they ever say you are not free to go, you say “Am I being arrested?”. If they say “no you are not being arrested”, you say again “Am I free to go?”. Keep it up as many times as necessary. Yes, it will sound like a stupid kid game, like “stop copying me”, but the game is very real with very real stakes, and this is their game to win, and yours to lose.

Being Arrested.

If they ever say anything like “you are under arrest”, or ever do anything to make you think you are being arrested, such as them restraining you in any way, you must immediately say the following magic phrase (memorize it!): “I do not consent to any search. I hereby invoke my right to remain silent. I want to speak to my attorney.” And then you SHUT THE FUCK UP.

Do not say anything at all about your arrest or why you may have been arrested, until you are talking in private with your attorney. Not with those cops, not with any other cops, not with any onlookers, not with anyone else who was arrested, not with anyone who is being held with you. Not even with your campmates, or with your friends, or even with your family. Even your spouse. Assume the police car, transport van, and holding cells are bugged. Assume the cops will lie about what you tell them. Assume everyone else will testify against you. You invoked your right to remain silent. Now use it.

Alcohol.

The camps with open bars that are giving away booze may ask to see your ID to verify you are older than 21 years. You don’t have to show it to them, but they don’t have to give you free booze either, and they probably won’t, fearing a bust.

If you are giving away booze, including beer or wine, and the person you are about to give it to looks like they could possibly be under 21, you should verify their age by checking their ID. The state liquor cops will be there, trying to bust you with stings.

Even if your camp is not running a public bar, random people will in fact walk into your camp and ask for booze. You will almost certainly have an under-21 plainclothes liquor cop walk into your camp at least once during the week, trying to sting you. Be aware, an alcohol service bust is an expensive way to ruin your burn for your entire camp.

And even if the person asking for a free drink is not a cop, it’s rude and against the burner ethos to beg for a gift.

Who Watches the Watchmen?

While the cops are dealing with you, you need to be memorizing the color and design of their uniforms, and if you can, their nametags and their badge numbers. They are *supposed* to be wearing visible nametags. Yeah, right.

As soon as you get away from the cops, go to Center Camp, or to a Black Rock Ranger outpost, and fill out a Law Enforcement Feedback Form and turn it in.

If you personally with your own eyes see the cops detaining anyone, arresting anyone, or searching anyone or anything, it is an act of Civic Responsibility (Principle 7) and a Gift (Principle 2) to Participate (Principle 9) in the burner community to memorize what you can, and then fill out a Law Enforcement Feedback Form.

Your camera.

When you see the cops in action, you may choose use your camera to record them. The judiciary at all levels has clearly stated that everyone, including you, have the right to record the police, as long as you don’t physically obstruct them. Cops hate it, but too bad.

If the cops tell you to turn off your camera, don’t do it.

They cannot lawfully order you to stop recording, they cannot lawfully order you to delete photos or video, and they cannot themselves lawfully delete any photos or video. If they do any of these things, they themselves are knowingly breaking the law, and that will be very useful in court. If they threaten to arrest you for recording, keep recording.

If you ever see a cop order anyone to stop recording or to delete anything, make sure that goes on the Law Enforcement Feedback Form.

While you are recording them, never get in their way, and stay back 35 feet / 10 meters. That’s tazer range.

“Undercover” cops.

The cops claim there are “very few” “undercover” cops at Burning Man. This is a very carefully nuanced untruth.

This art car was revealed to us in 2013 by a whistleblower, as full of undercover cops.

This art car was revealed to us in 2013 by a whistleblower, as full of undercover cops.

There are cops at the event who are not “undercover”, but instead are “plain clothes”. This means that instead of wearing duty uniforms and visible badges, they are instead dressed up in costume to look like burners.

They do not have to tell you they are cops when you ask them. You will not be able to “sense” that they are cops, until they bust you. Some of them have been doing this every year for more years than you have come to Burning Man yourself.

People have been busted by a cop who was wearing only sparkles and a miniskirt.

If someone you do not know asks for drugs or offers to trade you anything for drugs, they are a cop. If you met them this year at this Burn, you do not know them.

If you met these two girls a few days ago looking at art out in deep playa, and they are really cute, and they went out dancing with you last night, and they just suggested that if you can supply some “favors”, you all can “party together” in your tent, they are cops. No, really, yes, she and her girlfriend both are cops, and her coworkers are standing by to ruin your whole year.

What if I need “Police Services”?

What if you are lost? Or a camp mate is lost? Or your child is lost? Or you have found a lost child? Or you have found a lost fellow burner who is injured or is unable to take care of themselves? What if you are assaulted? What if something has been stolen? What if someone is hurt? What if you are really too high? What if you just can’t even?

Go to a BLACK ROCK RANGER, or to a ESD volunteer or station, not to a cop. The Rangers or ESD will help deal with the situation, and if the cops are actually needed, the Rangers or ESD can summon them and can deal with them. If the cops are not needed, then the Rangers or ESD can summon the right help for you.

Know what the Black Rock Ranger uniform is, and how it’s different from the cop uniforms. Rangers wear khaki shirts and khaki hats with the Burning Man logo on their hats, on their chests, on their backs, and on their vehicles. ESD have yellow shirts that say “Emergency Services” on them.

Have a great Burn!

Why We Burn: Pink & Jaguar

(For the first 2016 edition of Why We Burn, I had the privilege of speaking to two emerging talents in the NYC Burner community. They are part of the leadership of DiscoFist camp, which provides carbonation to water, or Disco Fizz, to weary travelers in need of some bubbles. They also run a tight, forward looking label called Talon&Claw and a cool party series on the Lower East Side, the next happening on the 15th, and for you LA people, they’ll be in your neck of the woods on the 22nd. They’ve been involved with retail venues, burner communities and more exclusive invite-only stuff only the island of Manhattan can offer, so I think you’ll enjoy their perspective. ~Terry Gotham)

1. How the heck was your 2015? Heard there was a little West Coast travel for you, how’d they treat you two out there?
Jaguar: 2015 was great! There were amazing, positive changes for both of us. We decided to drive across the country to BM this year and once we got to the West Coast, we decided we needed to stick around for awhile, so we extended the trip by about 5 weeks. We loved it out there so much that we’re heading back to California this week, and we’re looking forward to playing a number of dates there in 2016.
Pink: Our West Coast burner family is pretty tight and it was amazing to return from the desert to their dusty apartments to feel just as welcomed by them in San Francisco and LA as we felt on playa. Our West Coast friends didn’t want us to go and we didn’t want to leave, but we had stops on our tour in other states. We were treated very kindly everywhere we went, and had the most incredible reception of our DJ sets in Austin and in DC. Crowds there really come out to move their bodies! A refreshing change from the all-too-common stand-and-snapchat dancefloors of clubs in NYC. Continue reading
