California Gleaming: World’s Biggest Light Art to Stay

bay lights romanceA year ago, Burning Man Project director, Disorient founder and blinky light impresario Leo Villareal revealed the largest commission in the history of electronic art: $8 million to install 25,000 LED lights on the north-facing San Francisco span of the Bay Bridge. Some have called the 1.8 mile, 26 football fields long Bay Lights the largest sculpture in the history of humanity – while it’s certainly bigger than the Sphinx, I find this claim a bit of a stretch. The end result is amazing, for the best view of all get the ferry to the main ferry building just as the sun is setting.

The Bay Lights has been very popular since its debut, and was a notable feature of the city during the America’s Cup competition. WordPress founder Matt Mullenweg stepped up at the last minute to enable the project, adding to his initial $100,000 donation with a whopping $1.5 million contribution.

BayLightsLeo’s programming incorporated years of historical data related to the bridge:

Leo Villareal, a New Yorker who used to live in Silicon Valley, said he was inspired by the energy of the waves, tides, fog, wind, fish, boats on the bay, and the cars and trucks. “It’s very open-ended, and people have very personal reactions to it”

More recently, some of the lights started to go out:

In May, Ben Davis and his team noticed strands of the lights were staying on, while others were shutting off.

The problem seemed to be spreading, with 30-percent of the lights malfunctioning in some areas, marring artist Leo Villareal’s vast moving display.

Technicians walked the bridge, inspecting the strands of lights strapped to the cables, suspecting the wind, salt air and constant vibrations as the culprits.

“In taking in what was going on they figured out there’s a little bit of water was seeping in due to that harsh environment,” said Davis. “That was just enough to cause those problems.”

With the lights failing at a rapid pace, Davis pondered the worst-case scenario; turning off the lights and taking them down.

But instead, his team rallied.

Artist Leo Villareal reprogrammed the lights to work around the malfunctioning strands.

And light manufacturer Philips Color Kinetics agreed to finance repair and replacement of the lights as well as figure out a long-term solution.

“They’ve come in, they’ve helped us assess the problem,” said Davis. “They’ve owned the problem and the solution and they’re being completely responsible.”

The response from the community to the Bay Lights has been very positive, boosting business and tourism. From ABC Local:

bay lights how it works“It’s been overwhelming,” said Bay Lights artist Leo Villareal. “We’ve had 25 million people have seen the Bay Lights over the last year and it’s just an extraordinary response.”

Artist Leo Villareal designed the computer-driven strands of LEDs that paint flowing patterns in the night sky and bring crowds to waterfront restaurants.

“People come in earlier and stay later in order to be able to enjoy the lights on the bridge,” said Pete Sittnick with Waterbar and Epic Roasthouse.

Even hotels are getting a boost.

“Our top three floors, we’ve branded and marketed as Bay Lights rooms,” said Kory Stewart with Hotel Vitale and Americano Restaurant. “And we’ve seen a 20 percent increase in those bookings. It’s really become kind of a centerpiece of the neighborhood.”

A centerpiece with an expiration date.

“This piece was installed with a two year lifespan in mind,” Villareal said.

When Caltrans repaints the bridge in 2015, the lights will come down. But maybe not forever.

“The thought now is people really want the Bay Lights to remain for another 10 years, so we’re embarking on that effort,” Villareal said.

Rebuilding the lights as a permanent installation will cost $12 million. It’s money they’ll have to raise privately and bit by bit.

Caltrans needs to take the lights down to paint the bridge. The plan is to get them back up and running in time for San Francisco to host the Superbowl in 2015, and install more hardy lights with a longer life span.

Caltrans says the lights must be removed in March 2015, the end of the two years, so crews can paint the bridge for routine maintenance. And leaders of the Bay Lights project say they will raise $12 million and get the necessary government permits for a second, longer act.

“Bay Lights has raised the bar worldwide on what can be accomplished with art in large public places,” said Ben Davis, a board member with Illuminate the Arts, the nonprofit doing the project. “It has shown that a project can be done on this scale and bring the community together.”

From Bay City News:

Illuminate the Arts raised $8.7 million to turn on the display in 2013 and keep it lit until March 2015.

At Thursday’s anniversary event, Davis said the organization is kicking off a new fundraising campaign.

First, the group wants to ensure the lights stay on until 2016 after a brief scheduled shutdown next year for Caltrans to perform required maintenance.

He said the installation has to come down then for crews to make sure there is no rust and for paint touch-ups.

Once the show is back up and running, Illuminate the Arts is pushing to raise $12 million to keep the lights shining until 2026, Davis said.

“The idea of not having it there is almost distressing,” he said.

The project extension still needs to be approved by Caltrans, according to the Times Herald:

Villareal said he is confident the project will win another 10 years because of the experience gained in planning, funding and securing permits the first time around.

“It took an enormous amount of planning,” he said. “Yes. I think it will be easier this time.”

Caltrans and other agencies with jurisdiction over the bay and the Bay Bridge must approve permits to put back the sculpture. Caltrans officials had no immediate response on the new plan.

Davis said the wiring system can be put back in 2016, although newer and tougher LED bulbs will be installed to withstand the harsh bay weather…He said his group plans to have the light sculpture back in action in early 2016 when the Bay Area will host the 50th Superbowl at the 49ers’ new Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.

The lights consume $30,000 of electricity per year, which is offset by solar panels at UC Davis.

Time to Expand Our Consciousness

SPUN OUT BY THE SCOOP! Are we actually all mutually, collectively experiencing the deja vu that I spoke of a couple of days ago? Remember when last year, Burners.Me brought you the news that the permit was increased? Well, now we’re bringing it to you again – and it looks like we will be for the next 4 years.

Good news, more tickets! Even better, just as I’m about to post this one here, Whatsblem the Pro ducks and weaves and slips in a three pointer from the halfway line (ie midnight). I do feel scooped. And yet…

Are you ready for a trip? Did you see the trippy video? Did you read my throwing down of the gauntlet (via the powers of morphic resonance, Superdistribution/Cox and Supernature) to Whatsblem the Pro’s Rationalist view of the world? You know, the one where Newton is just some random dude under a tree and an apple falls on the head? And not a member of the Royal Society, an elite secret society based on the false world of clockwork mechanics? A chaining of irrational time to the human spirit, against natural time. This is what the prophecies speak of. A Golden Age, when truth and justice and peace and love and abundance and wellness and prosperity and living in tune with Nature prevail. Harmonic Convergence. AKA GOOD FUCKEN TIMES BABY!

cockoff1big-belly-cock-duck-mascot-costume-cartoonWhatsblem and I’ve been having a jocular , well, not flame war, perhaps we’ll call it “mild stoush” both offline and in the comments, which to both of us is of course one conversation occuring via the Internet. We’ve never actually met, but we see eye to eye on almost everything so far. Not this one though. Magical thinking (c’est moi) versus _____________________ …I’ll leave it to him to respond with his position to clarify the starting point of our debate. Think of it as the grumpy old guy up the hill (aka The Shaman) not quite seeing eye to eye with the Town Crier. I’ll call him Town Crier because he is batting a pretty good average right now on the popularity of his posts with y’all. I think a more moderate and eloquent viewpoint than my own. Whatever, I’m the grumpy old guy up the hill. Who’s actually pretty cheery.

I would never try to convince anyone of anything. I don’t actually think that’s possible. However, I am a living example of the power of positive thinking, and so is every other person I know who believes in positive thinking. Which I have to say is almost all of my friends and most of my family.

That’s not to say I’m a believer in any old shit that comes my way. Although, they say you can always sell a sales guy. When I first encountered Nassim Haramein, I was intrigued…but wanted to check out for myself if the guy was for real. I went to the Institute of Noetic Sciences in Petaluma. Edgar Mitchell was one of the Apollo astronauts, and he had an experience with an angel/alien on his way back to Earth from the Moon. This experience moved him to set up the Institute, which is a real place. It’s based on science, you might remember having read about it in the Da Vinci Code. Experiments that prove telepathy exists. 3-star generals, the former head of the US Special Forces, investing heavily in this interdimensional consciousness technology as a military capability. Maybe they’re all wrong, and the people who haven’t reviewed the material but cling to what they know are right.
sourcefieldOr, maybe, just maybe, the classified US black ops and the 50 years of peer-reviewed Russian science that David Wilcock outlines in the Source Field Investigations, actually has something to it. Maybe it’s worth looking into before you dismiss it, even if at first it sounds like nonsense. I looked into the idea of “everything came from a single spec of dust in the big bang and we can’t explain consciousness so it doesn’t matter, there’s no maths for it”…and concluded that worldview could not appropriately explain my own experience of the Universe. If science couldn’t explain what I’ve seen with my own eyes, then it’s science that’s wrong, not my eyes.

noetic changeThe Institute of Noetic Sciences is trying to produce peer-reviewed, academically acceptable science in the areas that science can’t explain – magic, the paranormal, the power of prayer. It’s a Burner type of place, the kind of place where shamans from all around the world could fly in and dance unseen in a forest grove next to you, while you’re listening to a guy like Nassim share deeply personal experiences with incredible passion and authenticity, about quantum physics. And, you could camp, although I’m not sure about getting an RV up there…I stayed at the nearby Sheraton Petaluma, right on the 101 with it’s own Marina. I spent a weekend with the guy, he spoke non-stop with passion and without hesitation, he drew a great crowd of about 100 people all in for the full 3 days…and I came away convinced. So did the two angels that were with me. I don’t have the maths or physics to say if he’s right or wrong, he certainly has some detractors on the Internet – as does every good scientist. But he seemed like a genuine and positive person to me, someone trying to make the world a better place even if he had to make some waves to do so. I’ve put a lot of hours into watching his material now, look around YouTube pretty much everything is out there. You can get right into it. I recommend it all, to me part of this guy’s gift is he makes this stuff simple.

So, here we go. I’m gonna take it slow. Ease in with the flow. Coz it’s only one post, there could be many more, we could go in many directions with this stuff. To me this is the best half hour introduction I’ve ever seen, I just tried it on a guest audience new to the material. DeeM iT so.

On this blog we do not advocate taking any drugs, prescription or otherwise, without speaking openly about everything that’s going on with your wellness to a good medicine man first. Or woman. The shaman. Take medicine in the right context, as Timothy Leary said in the 60’s, set…and setting…make sure you know who’s really dosing you, even if your dose is just Starbucks. You know, there’s a star on the logo, they make buck$…that one…

This, though…this we advocate. You don’t need drugs for this. You don’t need rigid dogmatic scientifc beliefs for this, and you don’t need zealous absolutist religious views the other way either. Who’s to say, who’s right, who’s wrong? Most likely, we’re both a bit right, we’re both a bit wrong. My point is… EXPAND YOUR FREAKING CONSCIOUSNESS. You wanna be a golf ball, you wanna be a melon, you wanna be the whole Universe? BE ALL YOU CAN BE

We live in a holographic Universe, and life’s what you make it. But it isn’t what the official schoolbooks tell you. Miracles happen. The more you notice they happen, the more they happen. If you’re reading this but you haven’t been to Burning Man before, this is why people like us Burners care so passionately about it. Here we get to experiment. A Temporary. Autonomous. ZONE OF SEPARATION

Anyway I’m talking about solutions to Einstein’s field equations.

Before you say “why don’t you present your evidence” – I have, it’s an 800 page book I just linked to. The guy spent years collating the evidence that used to be classified military secrets in this country, and accepted academic knowledge in others. There’s no point me repeating it here, now it’s a George Clooney movie, but Wilcock summarizes some of the key research in this video:

Over to you, WTP. You might lose me on the maths in your debunking, or indeed logic (!) however I think there is enough brainpower attached to this blog now that someone (eg my Knight in Shining Armor 5thfool) might step up to my “hippy intelligentsia” defense.

The Cacophony Society is a venerable but obscure institution that can lay claim to being the very origins of Burning Man, art cars, Santacon/Santarchy, the Billboard Liberation Front, urban exploration, culture jamming, and more, with strong ties to organizations, traditions, and phenomena like St. Stupid’s Day, zombie flashmobs, Survival Research Labs, the Church of the SubGenius, Fight Club, etc. The Society can also legitimately take some serious credit for the resurgence of circus/freak show/burlesque troupes across the nation and around the world.

The San Francisco Institute of Possibility, led by Chicken John Rinaldi, presented an “unauthorized book release party” at the Castro Theater in San Francisco last weekend for the release of TALES OF THE SAN FRANCISCO CACOPHONY SOCIETY. Whatsblem the Pro attended.

When I first heard that the Cacophony Society was having a book release party in San Francisco, I imagined a modest get-together of perhaps forty or fifty people at a place like City Lights Bookstore. Apparently, that’s what the book release party at Ferlinghetti’s Folly was supposed to be like: tweed, elbow patches, plastic cups of Cab-Merlot, little squares of fontina cheese with toothpicks in them, something light and unobtrusive on the stereo, and a lot of polite reminiscence about how much fun everything used to be.

Chicken John had a different vision; a bigger, bolder vision. . . so he shamelessly hijacked the event. At Chicken’s behest, approximately a thousand walking anomalies, professional raconteurs, semi-human chimerae, stump preachers, miscreants, miscreations, amateur inventors, bons vivants, characters, loners, part-time zombies, sports, morlocks, kooks, crackpots, anti-human racists, beatniks, geeks, Overmen, neodadaists, giant ants, screwballs, underground celebrities, common deeves, Situationists, Groucho Marxists, burlesque mutants, renegade federal agents, sign-wielding protestitutes, and other assorted weirdos invaded the Castro Theater and filled that hallowed hall (and the sidewalk out front) with a veritable bacchanal of conceptual and sartorial mayhem, in celebration of their tribe and people.

And of course, they shilled the book. Hard. Chicken John is, after all, nothing if not a consummate showman, and well-endowed with the appropriately hucksterish skills and instincts that go with that.

If you’ve never heard of the Cacophony Society before, or only have a rough idea of its history and purposes and accomplishments, then you’re quite mistaken if you think you know much of anything about Burning Man. For instance: perhaps you are under the impression that dictums like ‘Leave No Trace’ and ‘No Spectators’ are a Burning Man thing; of course they are, but we got them directly from the Cacophonists who first introduced Larry Harvey and his Man to the Black Rock Desert. John Law, one of the triumvirate that originally founded the Burning Man Org, is a very prominent Cacophonist. . . and he is a co-compiler and editor of TALES OF THE SAN FRANCISCO CACOPHONY SOCIETY. Without Cacophony, there would be no Burning Man, plain and simple. Cacophony is nothing less than the root of the many-branched tree of weirdness that makes life tolerable for those of us who realize that the Apocalypse has already happened.

Once I had a firm grasp on the scope of the event, I knew I had to be there come Hell or high water. An appearance by THE YES MEN was promised, as were performances by the likes of Al Ridenour and his brilliant ART OF BLEEDING troupe. POLLY SUPERSTAR was on the bill, and the Reverend IVAN STANG, spiritual leader of THE CHURCH OF THE SUBGENIUS, was rumored to be hosting, accompanied by Church luminaries PHILO DRUMMOND and the formidably erudite DR. HAL ROBINS.

Chicken John – whose sole failing as a carny is his unflinching generosity – graciously offered me a free ticket, and this bit of largesse cemented my resolve to make it to the show in spite of the fact that I was determined not to use that ticket under any circumstances. No; I was dead set on infiltrating instead and being a part of the show, a performer without portfolio, as unauthorized as the event itself.

To this end, I arrived early, and simply walked in amid the hustle and bustle of staff and crew getting ready, as though I knew what I was doing and was supposed to be there. Having located a coatroom backstage where I could stow my gear with that of the other performers, I changed into my favorite evening wear: a fully-accessorized Santa suit, paid for with the Burners.me credit card – still uncomfortably hot to the touch – that nestled in my Santa hat with the rest of my valuables. I wore my costume with the confidence that can only come from having True Santa Nature, an epic beard, and the assurances of the staff at the costume shop that my outfit had indeed been laundered since the last Santa threw up in it. They told me they went the whole 9 yards on the clean up job, they even used the best beard oil on the costume!

I spent the next two hours hobnobbing, palavering, flirting, exploring the Castro Theater, and joining the other performers in entertaining, confusing, and harassing both passerby and people waiting in the long line out front that snaked around the corner onto Market Street. . . and then, suddenly, the doors were flung wide, the line began to inch forward, the theater seats were filled. The show began in earnest.

After that, I can’t remember much. There was some sort of film playing, I recall, with a spinning hypnomat filling the screen as a man’s voice droned on and on from the surround-sound speakers. A strange odor filled the air as some kind of gas began to quietly hiss its way out of the ventilation system in smoky tendrils. Strong men first pounded upon, and then hurled themselves at, the oversized theater doors that led back to the lobby and safety, but to no avail; the Castro is an old theater, built well and well cared-for. The doors held; my head reeled.

Glimpses of half-remembered scenes that swim up from the darkness that followed are all that is left to me now: Andie Grace tucking a dollar into my Santa belt as I performed a wholly involuntary St. Vitus’ tarantella; Andy Bichlbaum, surrounded by a bevy of adoring painted harlots, tearing his own face off to reveal the face of Jacques Servin beneath it; Ivan Stang and Philo Drummond gently extracting an “ordination fee” from my nerveless fingers; a bizarre but tender assignation backstage with a honey badger (call me, honey!). A man covered from head to toe in bandages and wielding a keyboard and joystick seemed to be controlling all my movements.

When I awoke, I was in an alley in downtown Reno, soiled and disoriented. A hardbound copy of TALES OF THE SAN FRANCISCO CACOPHONY SOCIETY lay open before me in my lap, silently exhorting me to “DO YOUR DISHES.”

There seem to be some recordings on my phone, with time/date stamps that indicate they were made that terrible evening as I languished in some kind of nightmarish state of induced fugue. Stay tuned; once I’ve had a chance to listen to them I’ll let you know if they reveal anything of importance.
